Shine
Shine is the second stage in the 5S process. The goal of Shine is to clean the workplace and establish standards for cleanliness.
Plan
Shine is the most straightforward of all the 5S stages. At the end of this stage, your workplace should be clean to the standards established by your team. The standards should be realistic and maintainable over the long term. Here are some different ways that you can plan to maintain a clean workplace:
| Strategy | Reasoning |
|---|---|
| Deliniate areas of responsibility | By making a specific person responsible for a specific area, it creates a sense of ownership and accountability. |
| Rotate responsibility for communal areas | For communal areas, have one team member in charge of cleaning every day, and then rotate among team members. |
| Plan for multiple stages of cleaning | Sometimes it's easier to clean an area in waves, first taking care of the obvious issues and then working down to the smaller details. |
Once your team has created a definition of 'clean' for the workplace and gathered the necessary supplies, it is time to start cleaning!
Do
Cleaning can be a great team-building exercise. Try to make the most out of the Shine process by putting on some music and having fun. The actual cleaning part of Shine consists of typical household tasks:
- Clean the windows
- Sweep the floors
- Dust the shelves
It is up to your team to decide which of these tasks are necessary to meet your definition of a clean workplace.

Check
Before the cleaning stage can be considered complete, the workplace must be inspected to ensure the defined standards have been met. Inspection in this case is not meant to be disciplinary tool, but a second set of eyes that can help ensure the area is truly clean.
Act
If the workplace has been cleaned and has passed inspection, then you are ready to move on to the Set in Order stage. If necessary, go back and touch up the areas that did not pass the final inspection.
